HOW LONG ~ Oh Lord-! (Psalm 13) NewChristMan.com #jesuschrist

King David (who wrote this Psalm) uses the phrase "How Long" four times in the first two verses, indicating the depth of his depression. David frequently claimed that God was slow to act on his behalf. We often feel the same impatience. It seems that evil and suffering go unchecked ands we wonder when God is going to stop them. David affirmed that he would continue to trust God no matter how long he had to wait for God's justice to be realized. When you feel impatient, remember David's steadfast faith in God's unfailing love. David expressed his feelings to God and found strength. By the end of his prayer, he was able to express hope and trust in God. Through prayer we can express our feelings and talk our problems out with God. He helps us regain the right perspective, and this gives us peace.

How does “Blues music” connect to faith?

DrRock briefly mentions, “The blues can be sung forever,” implying the enduring nature of human sorrow, which aligns with the theme of Psalm 13 and its expression of pain. He then contrasts this by stating, “But I want to praise God for his unfailing love, for his salvation above, because God is good,” suggesting a shift from lament to praise. The connection between blues music and faith is profound and historically rooted in many of David’s Psalms.

Shared Origins: Both blues and spirituals emerged from the experiences of enslaved Africans in America, drawing on African musical traditions and call-and-response structures. Spirituals often use biblical themes to express hardship and hope, directly influencing the emotional depth and structure of the blues.

Expression of suffering and hope: Blues music, often called “secular spirituals,” expresses earthly struggles like injustice, loss, and poverty, serving as an outlet for raw, personal experiences. While gospel music focuses on collective hope and heavenly deliverance, blues provides a space to articulate deep sorrow and seek a form of earthly redemption by acknowledging pain.

“Public Theology”: Blues acts as a form of “public theology,” exploring the complexities of life, sin, and survival. It often mirrors biblical narratives of hardship and perseverance, such as the stories of Job and Lamentations, and can challenge and compliment the messages heard in the Body of Christ.

Emotional Release: Both genres (Blues and Gospel) provide a powerful means of emotional expression, whether it’s the lament in blues or the joyous praise in gospel. This shared capacity for channeling deep human emotion connects the two traditions.

DrRock explains that people often feel the same way when faced with unchecked evil and suffering. However, David’s example shows that by expressing feelings to God and trusting His unfailing love, one can find strength and regain the peace that passes all understanding in the Mind of Christ. The video concludes with a prayer for peace while waiting for God’s answers.

Lyrics

(Lyrics)

How long, How Long? How Long?
Will you forget me forever, still?

How long, How Long?
Will you hide your face from me?
Is this your will?

How long, must I wrestle with sorrow each day?
My hearts full of pain, my soul fades away.
How long, oh Lord, how long?

How long, oh Lord? How long?
Will my enemies rejoice when I fall to the ground.

How long, oh Lord? How Long?
In you, oh Lord, will my hope be found?

How long must I wait for you to light up my eyes?
Please look to me Lord, or I will die.
How long, oh Lord, how long?

Have mercy, I need your gentle love.
Have mercy, I need salvation above.
Let me see your face, I need your saving grace.
Have mercy, Oh Lord, have mercy.

I praise the Lord, for his unfailing love.
I praise the Lord, for his salvation above.
I praise the Lord, because God is Good.
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord.
