The Man Before the Mirror
So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image” (2 Cor. 3:18)
Dr. James Slobodzien, Psy.D.
Clinical Psychologist | Addiction Specialist | Theological Author
Before the music.
Before the alter-ego.
Before the “New Man” revelation — there was the clinician.
Dr. James Slobodzien is a licensed Clinical Psychologist and Certified Substance Abuse Counselor with decades of experience in mental health, addiction treatment, and criminal rehabilitation. His work has spanned hospitals, court systems, correctional facilities, private practice, and over 20 years serving as a Military Psychologist for active-duty service members.
With advanced degrees in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Criminal Justice, and Ministry, Dr. Slobodzien built his career at the intersection of science and faith — integrating psychological research with theological insight.
He is the author of multiple books on addiction, psychotherapy, and spiritual formation, and developed the 7-Dimension Addiction Treatment Model recognized in the medical field as a leading practice.
Long before he spoke about the “New Man,” he was helping others confront the old one.
This is the foundation.
The Man Who Found His Voice
The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord” (Is. 40:3)
DrRock
Musician | Songwriter | The Rock Expression of Faith
After the calling.
After the clinical path began.
After years of disciplined work, the music returned.
In the 1970s, after experiencing a Christian conversion while serving in the Army, Jim let his hair grow long and began writing rock songs for Jesus. Music became a natural expression of faith, raw, energetic, and alive.
As his professional life developed, he eventually cut his hair and stepped fully into his work as a psychologist, dedicating decades to helping others heal from addiction, trauma, and spiritual struggle.
But music never disappeared.
Years later, during a difficult season following divorce, classic rock once again became a source of healing. What began as personal therapy slowly grew into something communal. Small gatherings and Halloween karaoke nights allowed Jim to perform with friends as DrRock and the Almost Live Band.
What started as fun soon revealed something deeper.
Psychologists refer to the Batman Effect, the idea that stepping into an alter-ego can unlock courage, creativity, and personal transformation. Through DrRock, Jim discovered another dimension of expression where faith, music, and identity could meet. This chapter became a bridge.
A bridge between the clinician and the creator.
Between structured life and spiritual expression.
And it quietly prepared the way for the final revelation that would come years later, the discovery of the New Man in Christ.
The Man in the Mirror Revealed
For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed” (Rom. 8:19)
The New Man
A Symbol of Transformation | The Message Behind the Music
After decades of study.
After years of music and healing.
A deeper revelation began to take shape.
After publishing seven theological books and spending more than forty years studying Scripture, Jim came to understand what the Bible calls the New Man in Christ. The idea that through Christ, the old self can be left behind and a transformed identity can emerge.
This realization inspired a new song titled “GOD Damned the Nephilim, Better Put On Your New Man.” The song was written to help communicate the message of his book New Man Bible Theology.
To release the song on streaming platforms, an album cover was needed. This led to the creation of the AI image of DrRock, a visual representation of the New Man identity.
At first the image was simply artwork.
But soon it became something more.
The image began to represent the message Jim had spent decades teaching. Through Christ, a person can put off the old self and step into a renewed life.
Psychologists sometimes refer to this as the Batman Effect, the idea that adopting a symbolic identity can help people act with greater courage and purpose.
For Jim, the DrRock image became a way to model the message he teaches.
Not a mask.
Not a performance.
But a symbol.
A reminder that the Christian life is not only belief.
It is transformation.
The call is simple.
Put off the Old Man.
Renew the Spirit of your Mind. Put on the New Man in Christ.
